Do you have an emergency?
If you have an emergency, please call: 01 2896182.
Although teeth are very strong and resistant, dental emergencies can happen. Teeth can become broken, chipped, knocked-out or pushed in to the gum as a result of a fall, blow to the chin or jaw, biting down on something hard, tooth decay, heaving grinding or even sudden changes in mouth temperature. Knowing what to do in these situations can help increase the chances of saving the tooth.
Fractured Tooth
When a tooth becomes cracked, chipped or broken.
What to do:
Make an appointment with us as soon as possible. The treatment that the dentist will suggest will depend on the position of the fracture on the tooth.
In the meantime...
- Rinse the mouth with warm salty water (1 cup water & 1 tsp salt)
- Avoid eating or drinking in the area
- If there is swelling, apply a cold compress
- If there is bleeding, apply light pressure with damp gauze or cotton wool
- If in pain, take over-the-counter pain medicine
Knocked-Out Tooth
When a tooth is either knocked out of place or completely knocked out of the socket.
What to do:
Make an appointment with us straight away. The dentist may be able to save the tooth by placing a wire splint which will hold the tooth in place to allow time for healing. Timing is critical, so contact us immediately.
In the meantime...
- If the tooth is still in the mouth: do not remove it
- If the tooth is knocked-out completely:
- Replace it as soon as possible by placing it carefully back in the socket without touching the root
- If you are unable to place it back into the socket place the tooth between the cheek and gums or in milk
- Rinse the mouth with warm salty water (1 cup water & 1 tsp salt)
- Avoid eating or drinking in the area
- If there is swelling, apply a cold compress
- If there is bleeding, apply light pressure with gauze
- If in pain, take over-the-counter pain medicine
